The Des Moines Golden K Kiwanis Club financially supports Capitol View Elementary School and Findley Elementary School in Des Moines and works with students at both schools. Since the 1997-1998 school year, the club has contributed approximately $250,000 to both schools and children in general, excluding money given to the district and national foundations. Between 1997-1998 and 2017-2018 alone, the club contributed $24,985,08 to Findley Elementary School, $22,135.06 to Capitol View Elementary School, $69,497.62 to the YMCA summer camp and $23,511 to the YMCA environmental program for a total of $140,128.76. Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, the Golden K club is sponsoring the 28-member Key Club at Lincoln High School in Des Moines. The Key Club had been sponsored by the Downtown Des Moines Kiwanis Club, which has disbanded. There are more than 251,000 Key Club members in 45 countries. Funds from the club enabled eight Lincoln High School Key Club members and adviser Kristy Waltz to go the District Key Club Convention recently.
In February the Key Club held a swim party at Lincoln High School for 10 elementary schools on the south side of Des Moines. It sponsored a Halloween trunk-or-treat event for about 1,000 children last October that raised $300 for UNICEF.
The LHS Key Club will sponsor a leadership conference on Saturday, May 2.
The eight Key Club members who spoke at our regular meeting Thursday, April 23, expressed common themes such as development of leadership skills, recognition that their actions can have a positive impact on others, community service and cooperation.
In addition, Key Club members noted that the club has connected with business and health youth development programs.
Golden K helps new Circle K Club
Our Golden K club helped get a new Circle K Club up and running at Drake University in Des Moines. A representative of the Johnston Kiwanis Club that sponsors the Drake club and two Drake club members were introduced at our regular meeting on Thursday, March 5.

Honoring students in spring 2026
On May 14, Golden K honored six outstanding fifth and sixth grade students from Capitol View and Findley Elementary Schools during its regular meeting. The students received tablets, t-shirts, certificates and $10 gift certificates from Dairy Queen and were recognized along with teachers, parents and principals.

Established in Des Moines in 2008, the Kiwanis Miracle League enables youth with special needs to play baseball at a ball field near Principal Park, the home of the Iowa Cubs. The Miracle League field was named after Golden K member Bob Mitchell and his wife, Jan Burch, at the start of the 2026 season. Jan is president of the Miracle League board for 2025-2026. Bob serves as the board’s treasurer.

Our club provides new winter clothing for students at Meredith Middle School in Des Moines who do not have suitable winter garments through a $2,000 grant from Polk County. Thanks to club member Virginia Petersen and treasurer Gary Kruempel for facilitating this project recently.
District, International support
During 1998-2018 the Golden K Kiwanis Club contributed $9,849 to the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis District Foundation and the Kiwanis International Foundation. The total included $7,599 to the International Foundation and $2,250 to the District Foundation.
